How to Transform your Outdoor Space this Spring
The sky is blue, it’s light at 5 pm and temperatures are slowly starting to rise. With spring on the horizon, many of us will be eager to get out into the great outdoors and embrace the al fresco lifestyle. If your garden is looking a little shabby, or your yard could do with a bit of TLC, here are tips to help you transform your outdoor space ready for warm days and lazy, hazy evenings.
Lawn care and planting
One of the most important tasks to tick off your list as spring approaches is to make sure your lawn is in good condition. Wait for a sunny, dry day to cut the grass, trim the edges and plant grass seeds to revive worn patches. Fill flower beds with seeds, bulbs or plants that are due to flower in the coming weeks or use planters, baskets, window boxes or tubs to inject colour and interest into patios and terraces.
Extras for entertaining
Many of us are longing to invite friends and family over for Sunday brunches, Friday night drinks or afternoon barbeques. If you can’t wait to entertain again, it’s a great idea to spend the next few weeks getting your garden ready. Firstly, think about where people are going to sit when they come to visit. Depending on the size of your garden and the vibe you want to create, you could opt for a table and chairs set, an outdoor sofa, hammocks, bean bags and floor cushions or rustic benches and picnic tables. Next, think about feeding and watering your friends and relatives. From pizza ovens and barbeques to a fire pit grill, you can serve everything from freshly made pizzas and grilled meat, fish and vegetables to toasted marshmallows. You could even set up a mini bar or a drinks area with customised signs to finish off the look.
Lighting
Most of us like to spend as much time as possible outside when it’s warm and the sun doesn’t set until the evening. If you love the thought of staying up late with a drink in hand watching the world go by or chatting to friends, adding outdoor lighting is an excellent idea. You can use lights to ensure that you can see long after the sun sets and create ambience. From lanterns, torches and string lights to lamp posts, table lights and chic spotlights for patios, you can choose options that suit your taste and style.
Accessorising
Accessorising is a brilliant way to transform the aesthetic of your garden without spending a fortune or committing every free weekend to gardening and landscaping. There is a dazzling array of accessories you can use to channel themes and add colour, including planters and pots, tableware, lighting, ornaments and blankets, cushions and outdoor rugs and throws.
